Growing Interest in CBD for Tardive Dyskinesia Despite Limited Scientific Evidence

Authors of an article summarized information on cannabidiol (CBD), a major component of the cannabis sativa plant, and tardive dyskinesia (TD). The use of CBD for health conditions, including TD, is increasing in popularity in the United States. However, most of its purported health benefits lack substantial scientific backing, with the majority of research being preclinical or involving limited human trials. Despite this, a significant portion of the US adult population uses CBD for various issues such as pain, anxiety, sleep problems, PTSD, depression, and neurological disorders. This interest extends to those experiencing TD.

Regarding TD, the data on CBD’s effectiveness is limited but promising. Animal studies have shown potential benefits of CBD in addressing motor disturbances and oxidative stress caused by medications that could lead to TD. These findings are supported by previous research indicating CBD’s efficacy in various dystonic movement models. There are specific safety considerations for patients with TD, including mixed results in studies involving CBD and dystonic movements in Parkinson’s disease and potential drug interactions due to CBD’s effect on the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. Overall, more research is needed to conclusively recommend CBD for TD, and patients should be guided towards credible sources and informed about possible drug interactions.
