To minimize the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia (TD), stress reduction is key. Self-care gives those impacted by TD the mental and physical energy needed to cope with the many challenges of living with its symptoms.
Stress exacerbates TD symptoms, affecting diet, sleep, mental clarity, and energy levels. Reducing stress can alleviate symptoms. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling, walking, listening to music, and talking to a friend can be beneficial. Additionally, lifestyle hacks like using thick padded grips for writing, ordering easy-to-eat foods, and utilizing voice activation on digital devices can help manage daily tasks. Quality sleep is crucial, aiming for seven to nine hours per night to reduce stress and fatigue. Support groups can provide emotional support and a safe space to share experiences. Certain supplements and treatments, like Vitamin B6, melatonin, Gingko Biloba, and Botox injections, have shown promise in managing TD symptoms and should be discussed with a doctor. Finally, moderating caffeine intake should be considered, as it may worsen involuntary movements.
