Keith Wapniarski’s life took a drastic turn after a car accident in 1986, which led to severe migraines and pain. He was prescribed prochlorperazine, an antipsychotic, to manage his symptoms. However, after 20 years of use, he was abruptly instructed to stop the medication, triggering his first dystonic storm and leading to his diagnosis of tardive dyskinesia (TD). Eventually, he found a specialist who confirmed TD, likely caused by long-term use of antipsychotics. Over the years, Wapniarski tried various medications, including olanzapine, tetrabenazine, and valbenazine, but each had its limitations or severe side effects. Eventually, he found relief with CBD and cannabis, which helped manage his uncontrollable movements and provided some stability in his daily life.
TD significantly impacted Wapniarski’s physical and emotional well-being, forcing him to quit work and rely on his family for support. Support groups, along with his faith, also helped him maintain hope and positivity in the face of his condition. Wapniarski advocates for more caution and awareness around prescribing medications that can cause TD, believing that greater awareness could prevent others from facing similar struggles.
